Launching Competencies in the Organization?

Provide Training for Managers and Individual Contributors!

Launching Competencies in the Organization? If you have launched competencies within the organization, you need to be sure that training is provided prior to launch. Just developing the competencies and sharing a list of competencies is not sufficient.
Consider providing training via a webinar, face-to-face and/or virtual session. Cover topics such as:

  • An introduction to competencies
  • Why the organization is launching a competency model
  • The benefit to the employees and to the organization
  • A review of the competencies
  • How competencies will be measured
  • Processes and procedures
  • The tie to performance evaluation/performance improvement

Leave plenty of time for questions and answers.

Provide all the information provided in the training via handouts and via an internal website.

For managers, include some additional topics such as:

  • How to evaluate competencies
  • How to conduct assessments of performance
  • Aligning employee goals with competencies

As a best practice, trainers may also want to hold follow up sessions specifically focused on answering any questions after individuals have had training and have had a chance to review information and handouts.

Once competencies have been in place for a few months, follow up with managers to check in as well as with their employees.
