Moving Forward Implementing Organization Vision – Part III

How One Company Successfully Moved From Setting a Vision to Implementing that Vision

Read Part I and Part II of this article for background information. In part 3 we’ll focus on next steps – action planning – based on the discussions generated and decisions made at the off-site meeting.

Great discussions and conversations were had during the off-site and the participants were engaged and excited about the opportunities ahead. The next and final question then was, How do we move forward with implementing what was decided upon in the session?

We had the group break into three separate groups:

Group One: Focused on rolling out the selection and prioritization criteria for selection of projects.

Group Two: Focused on determining the project selection committee membership and developing the project proposal form, along with a plan for rollout.

Group Three: Focused on determining resources needed for projects, as well as communicating to the organization as a whole the decisions made at the off-site meeting.

The following was decided upon by each group and consensus was achieved in accepting each group’s next step’s/action plan recommendation:

GROUP

NEXT STEPS/ACTION PLAN RECOMMENDATION

1

  • Will write up information about selection and prioritization criteria (within one week)
  • Will develop roll out plan to share at next leadership meeting. Roll out of use of selection and prioritization criteria will begin in September as that is when the leadership meets for strategic planning. (will have plan ready within 3 weeks)

2

  • Develop criteria for project selection committee membership and will proposed potential initial committee members; will develop rotation schedule (within one month)
  • Will develop project proposal form (within 2 weeks)
  • Will arrange for meeting schedule for project selection committee membership once selected (within 2 months)

3

  • Will take inventory of current project resources – skill sets, types of projects work on, years with organization, etc and will share information with this group. (within 1 month)
  • Will determine additional resource needs based on gaps in skill sets/experiences needed for upcoming projects and propose to leadership team (within one month)
  • Will develop an overall communication on the efforts of this working group to share organization wide via email and the internal newsletter (within 1 week)

Two members of the group were selected to be responsible for follow up and ensuring action plan items were produced/developed as per agreed upon due dates.

As a final wrap up, a quick evaluation of the off-site was done. Attendees felt the time spent was valuable in finally moving forward with resolving an issue that has been discussed for a number of years with no significant progress. It was felt that, while the group involved in the off-site was very large, it did not seem to impact the productivity of the group and actually enabled for a broader perspective overall and a better end product.
