Three Ways to Prepare to Give Feedback to Employees

Before providing an employee feedback, ask yourself these three questions to effectively prepare for the meeting:

  1. Are you able to identify and describe inappropriate behavior that is impacting the employee’s performance and provide examples to ensure understanding?
  2. Are you able to discuss what appropriate behavior looks like and clarify and ensure understanding of expectations around behavior?
  3. Do you have suggestions for the employee on how to correct that behavior issues?

By preparing ahead of time for a discussion with an employee about his/her performance, you will enable for a more productive meeting.

Be sure that the meeting with the employee ends with a mutually agreed upon plan to correct the situation and schedule a date and time to “check in.”
