Staying Organized in Your Business

I saw this great video with three space saving gadgets for the home office (or any office space frankly) on Business on Main. Paul Hochman, in his Tech Notes, introduced three products: USB cable hub to reduce wire clutter, clip on LED task lamp to illuminate your laptop and a twistable power strip (I really love this one!).  Check them out in his video.

This video got me thinking about getting organized in general. If you are like me, your office space can get pretty unorganized fairly quickly. At any point in time I have two or three projects going on and my desk often looks like a bomb hit it! At least once a week (usually on a weekend) – I devote time to getting organized and catching up in general by filing away papers and other documents, catching up on business reading, and doing research for client projects or personal projects.

I also stay organized in the following ways:

  • Track “to do’s” via Outlook task lists along with maintaining my calendar in Outlook (all synched with my phone).
  • Organize in categories (folders) on my desktop articles that are of interest so I can easily access them for research projects.
  • Keep a whiteboard with current client projects and due dates (yes…in addition to my task list!)
  • Schedule time in my calendar to work on projects (no email, no social media, phone to voicemail) uninterrupted.

I don’t know about you…but I’m off to pick up the twistable power strip and the LED task lamp for those late nights in the office! Now….I just need to find something or someone (an office fairy maybe?) that will organize my desk space overnight and get my filing done. Suggestions?

What about you – how do you organize your time and your work space?
