Online Media Kits for Small Business

A recent article on Business on Main entitled, How to Create an Online Company Media Kit, focused on the use of online company information available to customers and media personnel over the use of print brochures and media kits.

What I found of most value in this article is it enforces the use of company’s websites to keep customers and media and others updated on what’s happening in the company. Certainly from a small business perspective the costs saved by keeping your information online should be all you need to make a decision. As any small business knows (and my business is no exception) keeping expenses down is key to survival in today’s troubled economy. Certainly there are many ways of doing so, and using an online media kit is one way.

An online media kit is not just to attract press, but rather benefits you with customers also. With so many customers searching the internet before even contacting you to learn more about you and your business, having a media kit online is one way to communicate with them about your business – who you are and what you do. Not having updated information for them increases your risk of never establishing a relationship with them – you may never get to know who they are simply because they don’t get past your website.

Essential to keeping an online media kit is to keep it updated. As noted in the article on Business on Main, it is important to have a regular schedule for updating the information in your online media kit so it remains fresh and keeps your potential and current customers engaged with your business.

When you update your media kit, use social media channels to get the message out. Twitter, LinkedIn network updates and Facebook all provide you opportunities to spread the word about your business and attract potential customers and press to learn more about you.

One last suggestion – create a project plan to get started right on developing your online media kit. Include these important components in your plan:

  • A timeline for completion
  • Initial documents to be made available
  • A plan for including additional documents on a set schedule
  • A plan for regular updates (maintenance) of the online media pages on your site
  • A few people with responsibility for maintaining the online media pages on your site

What are you waiting for? Get started today!

Your thoughts? What would you include in your online media kit?
