[...] A Stick of Training Last year, Gina Abudi wrote an article outlining a couple of strategies for making training “sticky” — that is, actually effective in changing skills or knowledge back on the job. It’s not an exhaustive study, but it has some good ideas and is worth a peek. A Process That Would End Reality TV Researchers at the Wharton School (at University of Pennsylvania) recently published an article that group dynamics may be killing innovation. One of their proposed solutions: thinking before you speak. Ah, the universal rule broken by failed politicians, drunken toast-givers, and reality TV stars everywhere. The article summary is good; the article itself has strong content as well. Wait, It’s Not For The Free Office Supplies? Dave and Wendy Ulrich posted a piece on Forbes.com a couple of weeks ago about leaders as meaning makers. Could be a deep topic, with lots of leadership implications. Or it could be a fluff piece that uses The Apprentice and Undercover Boss (two current reality shows) to make the point that executives need to help employees find a reason to work. Unfortunately, this went the wrong way. Is ANYBODY still unclear that ritual beatings in return for a paycheck is an ineffective approach? (Other than the Ulrichs, that is.) Write On, Jason Fried! This month in Inc., Jason Fried has a piece entitled, “Why Is Business Writing So Awful?” Not only are his points right on target, but it’s a fun, pithy article. By comparing dreary corporate-speak with great examples from other companies, you can see the difference in a nanosecond. About to write something? Read this first. All Work and No Play… On Harvard Business Review’s Conversation blog yesterday, Tony Schwartz shared his experience (and the related research) about work styles and productivity. Seems that more gets done with less focused time, if you structure the time correctly. Hey, we’re on board with ANY study that shows we can work less and get more done. This one in particular is a good read. Thanks for reading the newsletter. If you found something interesting here, please help spread the word by forwarding this email to a friend. We appreciate it! [...]

Hello Jessina,

I am glad you found the article of value. Planned for up front in the training, action planning has such a significant impact. It is, however, important to plan for it up front because you want the manager's involvement and, I always ask the participants to start thinking, prior to the program's start, how they will apply this back on the job - working in conjunction with their immediate supervisor.

Thanks again for your comment and for reading!

Best regards,
Gina

Hi Steve,

Thanks for your comment! I am glad you enjoyed it! I work closely with clients to ensure they understand the value of following up the training - you don't want to waste the investment made up front!

I have looked at your blog quickly - liked what I saw! Will be reading it regularly!

Best,
Gina

Hi Terrence,

Thanks for reading and for your comment. Glad you found it useful. EPS could be a part of the portal solution. A great idea! Thanks for the addition to the list! What are some ideas you have for making training overall enticing to Gen Yer's?

Topic is critical. Congrats on recognizing the need. One addition I would make is to add EPS (Electronic Performance Support). This is an attractive tool for our Gen Y's. Also, it gives all trainees access to a tool to help reinforce the skills learned at the training and have a tool to help them apply the training at work.
